Purpose
KO(O)RTS believes that programming is not neutral. Every film selected contributes to shaping cultural attention, visibility, and dialogue. Festivals do not simply reflect the world around them; they also participate in deciding which stories are given space, which perspectives are amplified, and which conversations are encouraged.
For this reason, KO(O)RTS recognizes that artistic programming exists within broader social, cultural, and political contexts. As a festival, we see our role not only as presenting work, but also as considering the conditions in which work is created, supported, and received.
We created these guidelines to support transparent and consistent decision-making and to ensure our programming reflects the values we actively choose to uphold. We believe artistic freedom and critical responsibility can exist together. Our intention is not to limit artistic expression, but to remain conscious of the impact and meaning of the platforms we create.
What We Stand For
KO(O)RTS exists to celebrate the weird, wicked, and wonderful while remaining conscious of the responsibilities that come with cultural programming.
We value film as a space for experimentation beyond the “rules” of what a film or story needs to be and we welcome ways of creating that explore beyond traditional formats and ways of expression.
We recognize that creating space is itself an action. Therefore, we strive to showcase diverse voices while creating opportunities for filmmakers and communities facing greater barriers to visibility.

How We Evaluate Films
1. Artistic Evaluation
Films are initially reviewed and selected based on artistic quality, originality and experimentation.
2. Ethical & Contextual Review
Additional review will take place for films originating from countries whose current leadership is formally charged with crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court.
The review will consider the funding and institutional context of the film, including production companies, sponsors, public funding structures, and institutional partnerships. We will also look at individuals involved in the film’s creation to ensure their public positions and actions are not in conflict with Ko(o)rt’s values. Films found to function as propaganda, state-image building, or cultural normalization efforts will not be programmed.
Accountability
KO(O)RTS acknowledges that ethical programming is an ongoing practice rather than a fixed checklist. As a small festival, we cannot investigate every production exhaustively. Decisions are made collectively and in good faith using available information.
We commit to reviewing these guidelines and continuing to adapt them as contexts change.
